FULLY EQUIPPED ATHLETE - POWERMASK BY SILENTMODE REVIEW

Many of you may have never heard of the Powermask, but I promise you after reading this blog, and hopefully trying it out for yourself, you will understand why I call it a gamechanger. The Powermask (pictured below) gives you 100% blackout, blocks out noise, and has speakers that play custom designed audio tracks. It connects to the Breathonics app on your phone via bluetooth, which allows you to choose various guided breathwork options, such as power up (great for the mornings) or power down (great for winding down at night). The combination of the Powermask and Breathonics app has completely changed everything when it comes to my daily breath work/mental fitness training, and sleep.

For any serious athlete, performing on game day is simply the culmination of efforts that have been put into getting there. For instance, three of the most important aspects of becoming a better athlete are diet, exercise, and sleep. At this point, I hope you’re convinced of the power of sleep for improving your performance on the field, in the classroom, and everywhere in your life. One important aspect of being able to maximize your sleep is creating an environment where you’re able to sleep and rest comfortably. If you live in an urban area with lots of ambient noise, if you have noisy roommates or siblings, or you find it difficult to get your room dark enough, the Powermask is a great way to help you have a good quality nap without any distractions. You can even use it for a full night’s worth of sleep. 

During my time as a ball player, I remember the long bus rides, hotel rooms on a busy street or airport delays all too well. Not only are those times that we all experience energy sapping and stressful, they are also very uncomfortable and certainly don’t make it easy to try and relax. The Powermask is a great way to remove the distractions around you and allow you to make the best use of the time to catch up on your sleep in the most efficient way possible. 

Instead of stressing yourself about waiting at an airport gate or hotel room, you can use the Powermask to cut out the world and focus on resting and relaxing. Turning the worst parts of travel into a positive experience is a great benefit in making sure you’re refreshed and ready to go for game time!

The Powermask gives you a fully immersive blackout experience. First, for your eyes it’s hard to describe just how black it is when you put this on, but still totally comfortable. That’s just the beginning though, because the Powermask also comes with built-in speakers. It’s perfect because when you move around while napping you won’t have to worry about any earbuds uncomfortably pressing into your ears or wires crossing or tangling up.

Additionally, you can connect the Powermask to your phone via bluetooth so you can use any sounds that you would like through the headphones such as crashing waves or a thunderstorm or music, podcasts or audiobooks. With your senses of sight and sound totally immersed in the Powermask experience, you’ll be able to relax and rest anyplace and any time.

To get the most out of the Powermask though, I’ve found it’s best to pair with the Breathonics App. Unfortunately this is only only available on IOS at the moment, but for those that use Apple products, this is a big value add. 

While optimizing sleep is something that I stress a lot to all athletes, there is one other area where the Powermask really shines that is important as well, so much so that I talk about both in The Fully Equipped Playbook.

While I encourage you to grab a copy of the Playbook to get all the details, the short version is that learning how to harness the power of breathing can help you gain energy, relax, and slow down the moment. Not convinced? Next time you’re watching a baseball game, watch how the batters prepare in between pitches. Many of them are taking a series of deep breaths as part of their routine. This is something that I did not only in the batters box but also in the field as well. While being able to slow down the game is something that is incredibly important during an elite athletic competition, this is still something that I practice every day in order to help me focus and center myself for my work and daily life.
