game day routine
Today, we're talking about the importance of having a set game day routine. Every athlete should have their own unique way of preparing for a game (there is no THE WAY!). The important thing is that you have a routine that helps you get in the zone mentally and physically.
Why is having a game day routine so important? Well, for starters, it helps you get into the right mindset that will lead to you putting yourself in the best position to succeed come game time. Separation is in your preparation!
By having a routine that you follow every game day, you're signaling to your brain that it's time to get ready for competition. This can help calm your nerves and reduce anxiety, which will then allow you to perform at your best.
So, what are some tips for developing your own game day routine? Here are a few to get you started:
SLEEP: A great day today STARTS the night before! Doing your best to get 8-10 hours of sleep everyday (especially before games) is crucial for optimal performance. Work on developing a PM routine that will set you up for a great night of sleep. Start by avoiding caffeine and electronics before bed, and create a comfortable and dark sleeping environment to promote quality sleep. Proper rest will 100% help with focus, reaction time, and overall physical performance on game day. I don’t call sleep the #1 performance enhancer for no reason!
PLAN AHEAD: Make sure you have everything you need for the game, such as your uniform, equipment, and any snacks or drinks you like to have before the game. Being prepared will help reduce stress and anxiety.
ARRIVE EARLY: Arrive at the ballpark early to allow plenty of time to complete your pre-game routine without feeling rushed. Use this time to get familiar with the field, take some practice swings, stretch, etc.
VISUALIZE SUCCESS: Spend some time visualizing yourself succeeding in different scenarios in the game. Imagine yourself getting a big hit for the team, making a great catch, or getting a big out on the mound. This is a powerful tool and will help boost your confidence and get you in the right mindset prior to stepping on the field.
WARM UP PROPERLY: Make sure you warm up your body properly before the game. This can include stretching, jogging, or doing some light exercises to get your muscles ready for action.
MENTAL PREP: Take some time to mentally prepare for the game. Review your in-game routines, cultivate an attitude of gratitude, watch a highlight reel of you at your best, etc., and then go do what you do best!
Remember, your game day routine is personal to you. Make it your own! Experiment until you find a routine that works for you and then be CONSISTENT with it. You'll find that it will lead to you feeling more confident, focused, energized and prepared than ever to go compete with all you’ve got.
